("all of a sudden running rich")
I thought of four other unlikely scenarios:
1) An all of a sudden air filter clogging; very unlikely, unless you drove through a swarm of grasshoppers. I once use a sock for an air filter on my BSA. The carb sucked up the sock and choke on it!
2) A bent float or a leaking float, that caused the float bowl to fill to the top with gasoline.
I once had an automobile on which the float bent, whenever I hit a harsh bump, such a railroad track!
3) The FUEL enricher stuck open!
4) The carburetor vacuum slide stuck in the UP POSITION, allowing the needle jet to be withdrawn from the needle jet, while the air butterfly could actually be throttled closed (a choke effect)!
